About Aasiaat

Aasiaat (Egedesminde) is a town in Disko Bay with 3,100 inhabitants. The biggest workplace in town is the fish factory. In addition, the town is the centre for North Greenland’s high school - Avannaani Ilinniarnertuunngorniarfik. Aasiaat was founded as a colony under the name Egedesminde in 1759 by Hans Egede’s son, Niels Rasch Egede, in memory of his father. The inhabitants are known for their active sports lives. In the winter, there are great opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowmobiling or dog sledding.

The town has a museum and a community hall decorated with 24 paintings by the famous painter Per Kirkeby. Aasiaat is the town of whales and whale safaris are readily available in the summer. The area has a great many humpback whales and minke whales. You can either sail or take a guided kayak tour and get really close to the fantastic wildlife in the area.
