Ilulissat (Jakobshavn) has almost 4,700 inhabitants and is located in Qaasuitsup Municipality. Most of the inhabitants in the town work in the fishing industry. In the summer, fishing takes place from dinghies and there is ice fishing in the winter. Transportation is by dog sled or snowmobile.
Just outside town, there is a huge ice fjord, which attracts many tourists each year. Ilulissat Icefjord has been on UNESCO’s world heritage list since 2004 because of its special glaciological characteristics. The fjord is 40 kilometres long and 7 kilometres wide.
From Ilulissat you can take a boat trip to the beautiful ice fjord, to the surrounding villages or to the calving Eqi Glacier a little north of Ilulissat. If you prefer to see the site from the air, you can take a helicopter trip and experience the beautiful landscape from the air.
There are two museums in town, Ilulissat Museum, which is also the birthplace of Knud Rasmussen and Inuit Art Museum where there is a large collection of the works of the famous painter Emanuel A. Petersen. There are several souvenir shops in Ilulissat, selling sealskin products and handicrafts made locally.
