Maniitsoq (Sukkertoppen or Mount Sugar Loaf) lies on an island and has almost 2,700 inhabitants.
The area is rich in fish and whales are often seen in the summer. There are exciting ski sports areas in Maniitsoq, but this has only really become known internationally in recent years. 25-30 kilometres from town, you find the Apussuit Adventure Camp. This is a ski resort with direct access to the glacier at an altitude of 1000 metres. The camp itself consists of a series of cabins. Heliski trips and snowmobile rides are available. Near the town, there are cross-country ski runs, both for recreational skiers and for elite skiers. In the summer, there is plenty of opportunity to go fishing.
Kangia Camp is an exclusive angling camp, where you can catch Arctic charr. It is possible to go hunting and trekking, but you could also simply enjoy the relaxed atmosphere in town.
The town has a culture-historical museum, which is beautifully situated in Kirkegårdsdalen. There is a large collection of art at the museum. The old buildings previously housed smithy, baker, brewery and colonial office.
