About Narsaq

Narsaq has around 1,700 inhabitants. The town sprawls over a great, flat area and is therefore called Narsaq, which means plain.

The fjords around the town are rich in seals and fish. You can go fishing in the region and there is a good likelihood of catching red fish or cod. The region is known for the beautiful Arctic char that swim in its fjords.

The productive glaciers ensure there are always icebergs around the town. There is a museum in town with several historic buildings close by, e.g. the Blubber House, Henrik and Malene Lund’s house. The house opened as a museum in connection with the town’s 150th anniversary in 1980. Today it is a memorial to Henrik Lund, who was a famous poet, composer, politician, artists and clergyman in Narsaq.

The Blubber House was built in 1848 and was used to store the goods that KGH (the Royal Greenland Trading Company) bought from the local hunters.

In the summer, the region surrounding Narsaq is green and fertile. There are several sheep stations and farms around Narsaq and it is a good place for short or long walks. Try hiking to Kvanefjeldet – a region with unique geology. The region is known for is rare and beautiful minerals and rocks. Here you can find the red tugtupit, which is considered the national gemstone of Greenland.
