Nuuk (Godthåb) is Greenland’s largest town with 16,000 inhabitants. The town was founded in 1728 by Danish - Norwegian missionary Hans Egede. In the capital, you will find the central administration of Greenland’s Selvstyre, the government. The town is also the hub of the political and cultural arena.

Nuuk is a modern city with cafés, a beautiful indoor swimming pool and the Katuaq culture centre where you can enjoy a caffè latte or see the newest 3D film. But you can also take a walk to the old part of town – also called the colonial harbour. This is the area with the old hospital, Vor Frelsers church (Church of Our Saviour), the statue of Hans Egede and Hans Egede’s house. The house is from 1728 and the Greenlandic Selvstyre uses it today for representative purposes. If you are interested in Greenlandic history, you can take a walk to the National Museum and see different exhibitions showing part of Greenland’s history, including the Qilakitsoq mummies. The mummified bodies were found in 1972 close to the old village of Qilakitsoq near Uummannaq.

You can also visit the Art Museum, which is Greenland’s only private museum. Here, you can see e.g. Emanuel A. Petersen’s paintings and a unique collection of paintings, watercolours and drawings by Greenlandic artists.
