About Paamiut

Paamiut (Frederikshåb) has 1,600 inhabitants. The name of the town means “at the mouth” – because the town lies at the mouth of the Kuannersooq Fiord.

The main occupation is fishing and Greenland’s maritime educational institution, Imarsiornermik Ilinniarfik, is located in the town. The old part of town is an idyllic area with picturesque buildings. Here, you will find the old store, the colonial administrator’s residence and the beautiful “Eqqissinerup qaluffia” church, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2009.

Take a walk in the old part of town or visit the town’s museum. The region around the town is beautiful and in the summer, there are plenty of opportunities to sail out with the local fishermen. The place provides many opportunities for fishing – for red fish, fjord fishing or fishing for Arctic char - or how about going on a reindeer hunt with the locals in the hunting season.
