Qaqortoq (Julianehåb) is Kommune Kujalleq’s (South Municipality) largest town with 3,400 inhabitants and it was founded in 1775. High mountains, colourful houses and historic sites surround the town.
In 1993/1994, 18 Nordic artists came to the town and started the project “Rocks and People”. Today you can see these beautiful works in the rocks all over town. Greenland’s only fountain can be found on the Torveplads.
Traditionally, newly fledged students gather here in the summer to dance around the fountain. The town’s oldest house, dating from 1804, is also here and is today used as a museum. In this region, you can see the beautiful river or look in on the town’s open-air market and buy fresh fish and vegetables. One of the town’s landmarks is Tasersuaq – Great Lake, where you can go for a walk along the path. This great walk takes 3-4 hours.
In Qaqortoq, you find Great Greenland, a factory that processes sealskins for the wholesale trade. There are plenty of sights around Qaqortoq. There is the Hvalsey church ruin, which lies in the area named Austurbygd – Eastern Settlement - by Erik the Red. The church is the best-preserved building from the Norse times. On the way to the Hvalsey church ruin lies the Upernaviarsuk agricultural testing station, a centre for agricultural studies and agricultural courses in a sub to low Arctic environment. In addition, there are small stocks of cattle and horses at the station.
Further south at Uunartoq there are warm springs. The lakes are located on an island about 50 kilometres south of Qaqortoq. While you enjoy the pleasant, year-round 38-degree temperature, you can watch and admire the icebergs that drift past. On the excursion, you could be lucky enough to spot seals and whales. The tourist office arranges boat excursions to the Hvalsey ruin, Uunartoq and many other places.
