Qeqertarsuatsiaat (Fiskenæsset) is a village with 200 inhabitants, situated between Nuuk and Paamiut, about 150 km south of Nuuk. Qeqertarsuatsiaat means “the very big island” and the name Fiskenæsset refers to former large populations of salmon near Qeqertarsuatsiaat.
Today, the village’s main industry is fishing for cod and lumpfish. It is a geologically interesting region. In the last couple of years, a Canadian mining company has found considerable deposits of rubies at Qeqertarsuatsiaat.
