Sisimiut (Holsteinsborg) has about 5,600 inhabitants and is the next-largest town in Greenland. Sisimiut is the northernmost town in Greenland with an ice-free harbour in the winter months and this makes shipping possible all year round. In the summer, there is plenty of opportunity to come out on a boat trip. There is a very good chance of seeing seals, whales and birds. You can go fishing and bring home a fresh catch for your supper. The region around Sisimiut is ideal for walking. Seasoned hikers can take the walk from Kangerlussuaq to Sisimiut – a 7-10 day trip. Each year, Sisimiut hosts the Arctic Circle Race – the world’s toughest ski race, where skiers from all over the world compete against each other in cross-country skiing. The race takes place over three days in beautiful natural surroundings and the competitors sleep in tents. A stay in Sisimiut in the winter means you can go on a dog sled ride – an experience that cannot be described; it must be felt. The region is also ideal for skiing, both cross-country and alpine, or you can go on a snowmobile ride. In the town itself, you can pay Sisimiut Museum a visit. The museum is located in the beautiful old colonial buildings. There is the Colonial Administrator’s Residence, The Old Shop and the Assistant’s Residence. Down by the harbour you will find the arts and crafts workshop. Local artists work at their art here.
